The Mustard Seed

In the book of Matthew chapter seventeen verse 20, Jesus talks about having the faith the size of a mustard seed and what a person can do with such faith.

The other references to a mustard seed are in a parable of the mustard seed, the tree it grows into and that it becomes a shelter for the birds. The comparison is to God’s Kingdom. We would be the birds finding shelter.

The smallest of seeds, yielding the greatest of things. Moving mountains and providing shelter.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t move a mountain. I have trouble many times with smaller day to day tasks and getting things accomplished in a timely manner.

Where is my faith and why is it so weak?

Going back to the mustard seed growing into a tree that provides shelter, the seed had to go through growth and transformations. This isn’t so for God’s Kingdom, but it is for plants that grow here in His creation. The same is true for us and our sanctification. The same is true for our faith.

Though I may not be able to move the mountains of work here on the farm, when I place a call for help and combine the faith of many, mountains get moved.

It is here we see faith at work. The sharing of burdens. The gathering of brothers and sisters in Christ gathering for the purposes of loving neighbors and glorifying God.

There are times people come and don’t believe in Jesus. That is absolutely OK as well. We see all through Scripture people who don’t believe working within His Kingdom for His purposes.

What are some examples you ask?

It was in the spring of 2014 and I was going through cancer treatments. We hadn’t even been on the farm a full year yet and spring was upon us. My beautiful sister in law, Sarah, made the call to people in and about our community and we ended up with around 30 people putting their hands to work on our farm. I was sitting on the couch looking out the window at all the people working. I shed tears. It was humbling.

About five years ago now we were fencing in the back garden, called the back 90, to help keep groundhogs, deer, and other critters from getting at all the goodies growing. It was roughly forty feet wide and one hundred feet long. We wanted to bury the fence 12 inches into the ground to keep these critters from digging under. The posts needed to be about 9 feet high to help keep deer from jumping in. It was a daunting task. I started it by myself and then asked my bride to help. In about three days we didn’t even get 25% of it done and we were exhausted! We put the call out to our community and almost 20 people came out. We finished the rest of it, plus other fencing in less than a day.

I was overwhelmed and humbled once again.

These are just two stories of how Jesus showed Himself faithful through the faith of others. The combination of many seeds of faith, brought together to move mountains.
