Dayenu means it would have been enough in Hebrew.
Last winter while the Shiloh ladies were in New Hampshire enjoying family and the snow, I was home taking care of the farm. I was also watching season five of The Chosen.
One night the episode was when Jesus was celebrating the Seder with his disciples. One of the traditions of the Passover meal is singing the Dayenu. It is a song which takes those singing through the journey of God redeeming His people from slavery out of Egypt. Each stage of our ancestors journey is followed by “it would have been enough.”
This morning in my Lectio 365 devo they mentioned “it would have been enough.” Dayenu.
This challenges my heart. If all I had was knowing my salvation, and none of the blessings, would it be enough? If I were homeless, pennyless, and no bed for my head, but know I have a home in heaven with Jesus, would it be enough?
If I did not have my family, but have salvation, would it be enough?
I sit here and think of Abraham and his faith, when sacrificing Isaac. I sit here and ponder and I hear in my spirit; “render your heart and not your garments.” It is the things of this world that trip us up. They are stumbling blocks. They blur our vision. That weigh us down. I am not talking about my family here, though Christ is the priority and the head of our household.
We get ourselves all wrapped up and bent out of shape with politics, sports, relationships, money, you name it.
Am I truly content?
Now I back up and take the focus off myself, an put it on those around me, now and throughout the course of my life. The work the Lord my God has done in my life and through my life. I am so deeply grateful. The love I feel. The desire I feel to serve.
Despite my sinfulness and shortcomings, Jesus loves me. He is Faithful. He continues to work in my life, despite myself. I sit here and think to myself, it isn’t enough. I want all of Him, and I know He wants all of me. Only then will it be enough. The beauty of His word, from beginning to end. Alpha and Omega. The journey that is the struggle, but nonetheless beautiful. All because of His love. All because of His faithfulness. All because of His work. All because of His sacrifice. All because of His mercy. All because of His grace. And all for His glory and joy.
All because He calls us His own. His own creation, created in His image. His workmanship. Perfect. Not because we are, but because He is!
Dayenu – Jesus is enough.
